The Valley Gardens are lovely there at this time of year & you can take a train that runs alongside the river:-

I`ve always liked Saltburn. Once went on a course at that big hotel on the front. I think someone said that the cliff lift is the only one of its kind in the world.

We used to have a caravan at Saltburn which we went to every weekend during the season. I used to spend my six weeks school holidays there and I have many fond memories of the place.

Remembered at last. An article in today`s paper reminded me. The lift may have to temporarily close as some safety gear has been stolen.
Here`s a pic I took a few months ago. I`ll try to replace it with a better one at the weekend.

There were quite a few Shildon people who had caravans at Saltburn, most of them had connections to Shildon Works and received free rail passes and such. The best times I can remember were the long hot summer days of 1976, a load of us building camps in the woods, days on the beach, messing about on the boating lake (not there now), catching the little train up to the Italian Gardens, and just generally exploring Saltburn in the carefree days of the seventies.

Now I am a fully fledged photo uploader , I can respond to a question posed about if there are other water powered lifts - I know that Folkestone has goo one or two. I think they had about 3 or maybe 4 at one time but like a lot of the seaside resorts the popularity dropped and they were removed.

I think that view of the cliffs from above is one of the lasting memories I will have from the north east. It is on my desert island discs - photos collection should i ever be asked.

For a change from our usual routine of drinking in Whitby, myself and the Dougmeister went for a jar or two in Saltburn yesterday. A very pleasant day was had & the weather was lovely (see picture) but we did have a rather puzzling, to us, experience.
We went to our favourite pub, The Marine, and there was a race being held from there. Nothing strange about that but the race involved runners and racewalkers. Running I get BUT race walking? What's that all about?
A very strange looking sport to my eyes, but it was very well supported and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
After a gallon of Guinness, we were even considering joining in!

I was one of those competing (sort of) in the Saltburn 10k, running not walking. Those walkers look like something off the ministry of silly walks, though I'm reliably informed that walking is an extremely difficult discipline to master.

I called in the Marine for a glass of juice after the race, were you those 2 rambunctious chaps making all the noise sat in the corner by the window :?:

I've added a picture of me in action taken by my good friend John

Tomorrow would be a good day for a trip to Saltburn. The weather forecast is excellent & this might be the last of our "Indian summer" days.
Clear blue skies, sunshine & a temp of 17 degrees is forecast for this neck of the woods.
Also to mark the end of British Summer Time there will be the spectacular "Pageant of Light".
The procession of music and light starts at Cat Nab car park (on the front down near The Ship pub ) and then goes through the Valley Gardens to The Woodland Centre. I`ll be popping into The Marine first for a quick pint of real ale -- hopefully from the Ring O` Bells cornish brewery.

Didn't make Saltburn as I was stuck in Fleetwood all weekend discussing a potential contract. The weather was good over there too, but I would have much prefered being on the East Coast having a pint or six with the friendly locals of Saltburn.
Was it a good day?

Mr & Mrs Kristof and Kristof's Mum went to Saltburn for Sunday lunch in The Spa, which we thought was very reasonable and good value for money.

Afterwards we went for a walk along the pier which was ever so windy. Its a good job Mum had her handbag with everything in it to hold her down or I think she may have been blown away.

I ran from home to Saltburn this morning, on the cliff-tops wherever possible. It was a beautiful morning, the light quality was amazing, wish I'd taken my camera.
My good friend Doug met me with a change of clothing and a hip-flask and when I'd cooled down we went into The Alexandra Vaults (THe Back Alex). The Guinness was superb and the people were charming, we'll be heading back there very soon.

You`d get a better pint just round the corner on the upper prom at the Marine. They always have "Old Trippe" but much better is their guest ale --- currently "Quadhops".

Yes Ken, we like The Marine, too.
We must try some of the real ales that you are so keen on, we are little blinkered by the black stuff, as it's generally consistently good quality, wherever we buy it. A change is as good as a rest, as they say, so next time we are in Saltburn we'll give it a whirl.
Years ago, we used to drink 80 Bob in The Ship, can you still get that or is it long gone? Haven't seen it for yonks.

Dont know of any at the moment. Will keep an eye out for any. Its a long time since I`ve visited the Tom Leonard mining museum(not the Cleveland mining museum) at Skinningrove though. I gather its bigger & better now but you need to prebook during the winter months so I`ll wait till the spring to revisit.

I like to think of myself as fairly highbrow Ken (I take the Telegraph), but on a Saturday I take the Guardian and the Morning Star, just to keep an eye on what the enemy has planned.

Postby David Burgess » Sun Oct 19, 2008 2:27 pm

I am glad to see the photograph of Saltburn by the Sea, it has hardly changed over the years

I remember my Gran Burgess lived there before she moved to Hartlepool. She had a B&B in Amber Street, I think.. To get there you had to come out of the train station across the road and make your way towards the sea front. I lived with her for some months, I would be about ten or eleven at the time. The water outlet you can see in the picture is like a river. During the war the the lower part nearest the sea was closed with barbed wire, however, I had made friends with an old fisherman who had a small rowing boat who took visitors to Saltburn up and down the river at 3d a time, after a while he allowed me to row these visitors and gave me a small wage of sixpence a week, this was during the school holidays, sometimes the visitors would give me a tip if I rowed fast. I remember showing off my muscles to all who were there.

The one other thing I remember about my Gran's B&B, was the time when I had come downstairs, near to the dining room and found her shouting at one of the waitresses about being slow and stupid and telling her to go home, without any references. The lass must have been about 14 years of age at the time, Does anyone know who I'm on about? She ran out crying. I asked my Gran why she did that, she told me there were plenty of her kind looking for a job.

I will Post other memories of Saltburn later

Saltburn has so much going for it but the thing that sums up the Olde Worlde charm is, it still has a Spar.
Reminds me of a more innocent (dare I say happier?)time.
